Deputy Administrator for Operations
Nancy L. Ayers serves as the Deputy Administrator for Operations for the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. She oversees the Innovation and Research division and Budget and Administration division, which manages OJJDP's administrative and program budgets and carries out its compliance monitoring, training and technical assistance, research, and communication and web activities. The Office provides national leadership, coordination, and resources to prevent and respond to juvenile delinquency and victimization.
Ms. Ayers served as Acting Director of the Office of Communications at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She advised the Administrator on public education, public affairs, and communication activities and led the Agency's Public Awareness and Support strategic initiative.
Before joining SAMHSA, Ms. Ayers served as the Deputy Administrator for Policy in the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP). Ms. Ayers coordinated the development of policy and communication activities supporting OJJDP's mission of preventing and responding to juvenile delinquency and victimization and for improving the juvenile justice system.
Previously, Ms. Ayers served in the Office of the First Lady as Associate Director of the Helping America's Youth Initiative, a nationwide effort to raise awareness of the challenges facing youth and to motivate caring adults to connect with young people in the home, at school, and in the community.
From 2003 to 2006, at the Department of Justice, she was Director of the Office of Justice Programs' (OJP's) Office of Communications, where she managed media, congressional, and public outreach on behalf of the agency.
Prior to joining OJP, she served as Senior Advisor for Strategic Planning and Senior Communications Advisor to the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. She also worked on Capitol Hill as Communications Director for a U.S. Senator and was a producer with CNN's Crossfire program for seven years.
Ms. Ayers holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Communication from Clarion University of Pennsylvania.
