On September 30, 2015, President Barack Obama issued a proclamation designating October 2015 as National Youth Justice Awareness Month.

OJJDP envisions a nation where our children are healthy, educated, and free from violence. If they come into contact with the juvenile justice system, the contact should be rare, fair, and beneficial to them.

Between 1997 and 2013, the number of delinquency cases in which the juvenile was detained decreased 39 percent. In 2013, person offense cases were the most likely to involve detention, followed by public order offense cases.
