Q: Are most juvenile offenders held in small facilities?
A: More than half of facilities were small (holding 20 or fewer residents), but nearly half of juvenile offenders were held in medium facilities (holding 21-100 residents) in 2010.

  • Although the largest facilities—those holding more than 200 residents—accounted for only 2% of all facilities, they held 16% of all juvenile offenders in residential placement.
  • Inversely, although the smallest facilities—those holding 10 or fewer residents—accounted for 32% of all facilities, they held only 5% of all juvenile offenders in placement.
