Facility Characteristics
Q: Do residential placement facilities hold violent youth as well as non-violent youth?
A: Most juvenile residential facilities had a mix of youth held for violent and nonviolent offenses.

Offense mix by facility type, 2019

Population offense mix Total Public Private Total Public Private
Total 1,523 907 616 100% 100% 100%
No mix of violent and nonviolent youth 474 162 312 31% 18% 51%
Mix of violent and nonviolent youth 1,049 745 304 69% 82% 49%

Notes: Facilities identified here as not having a mix of youth held for violent and nonviolent offenses, may in fact, allow both types of youth, but merely had no mix on the census day. The specific housing arrangements of facilities identified here as having an offense mix are not known. Violent and nonviolent populations may be separated within a facility.

The term ‘youth’ refers to persons under age 21 who were in a facility because they were charged with or adjudicated for an offense.
