The COVID-19 pandemic had significant effects on all stages of the juvenile justice system, including juvenile residential facilities, which may have impacted multiple aspects of the 2020 JRFC data, such as reporting, the number of youth in residential placement, and the services received.

- The majority of facilities (96%) reported evaluating all youth for suicide risk in 2020.
- A larger proportion of public facilities (98%) than private facilities (91%) reported evaluating all youth for suicide risk. Nearly all locally (97%) and state-operated facilities (99%) reported evaluating all youth.
- Nearly all detention centers (99%) and long-term secure facilities (98%) evaluated all youth for suicide risk.
