Detection and Prevalence of Substance Use Among Juvenile Detainees (NCJ 203934) June 2004 | Bulletin | | 16 page(s) | McClelland, G.M., Teplin, L.A., Abram, K.M. | Assesses substance use detection methods (self-report and urinalysis) and prevalence among high-risk youth detained in Cook County, IL. Based on data from a Northwestern Juvenile Project study, this OJJDP Bulletin covers a wide range of substances but focuses on cannabis and cocaine, the drugs most commonly used by juvenile detainees. The Bulletin includes analyses by age, sex, and race/ethnicity. The study confirms a high rate of substance use among detainees. The authors conclude that the best approach to detection is to combine self-report and urinalysis and to also use other resources such as treatment and drug arrest histories and information from schools and families. | PDF | HTML | | |
