The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention sponsors the Census of Juveniles in Residential Placement (CJRP), a biennial survey of public and private juvenile residential facilities in every state, which presents a detailed picture of the young people in residential placement nationwide—including age, race, gender, offenses, adjudication status, and more. The information in this bulletin will hopefully encourage juvenile justice professionals and policymakers to investigate appropriate alternatives to confinement for young offenders, improve their conditions of confinement, reduce the proportion of status offenders held in residential placement, and provide the programs that these youth need to help them become successful adults.
