Profiles more than 1.7 million delinquency cases and 162,000 status offense cases handled by the juvenile courts in 1996, providing detailed information on offenses involved, referral sources, detention practices, and dispositions. Also includes demographic characteristics of juveniles and trends from 1987. This Report is the 70th in the Juvenile Court Statistics series. National caseload estimates for 1996 were based on approximately 894,600 automated case records plus court-level statistics summarizing more than 191,500 additional cases. Data were contributed to the National Juvenile Court Data Archive by nearly 1,800 courts with jurisdiction over 67 percent of the juvenile population. Includes analysis, 83 tables, 26 figures, and an appendix with county- and State-level case statistics.
