Based on solicited input from truancy case managers from seven truancy programs in seven States, this handbook summarizes their truancy program descriptions and experiences in managing truancy cases, and 22 case studies provided by the case managers are presented.
Abstract
The handbook has three sections. The first section, "Advice from the Field," summarizes key recommendations and insights from the submissions. Although case managers who provided input work in different communities within different program structures, there is significant agreement about what works most effectively with families in promoting school attendance. Recommendations are presented under the following topics: program structure, general strategies, relationships with families and students, and warnings. The second section, "Program Descriptions," provides information on seven truancy programs from across the Nation. For each program, general background information is provided, along with advice to case managers and descriptions of the program features that proved effective in reducing truancy. The handbook's third section, "Case Studies," presents 22 successful case studies of students who were helped by truancy programs. The format for the case studies consists of the background of the student and family, challenges and assets, case management activities, and alternate strategies.
