Livestream Discussion on Community-Based Approaches to Juvenile Justice

On October 21, 2016, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. ET, the Office of Justice Programs will host a discussion on community-based models for juvenile justice. The livestream event will feature remarks by Assistant Attorney General Karol V. Mason, OJJDP Administrator Robert L. Listenbee, and National Institute of Justice Director Nancy Rodriguez. During the event, leading researchers and practitioners will discuss the paper “The Future of Youth Justice: A Community-Based Alternative to the Youth Prison Model.” The paper explores recent research in developmental psychology and widespread reports of abuse in juvenile facilities and recommends that the current youth prison model should be replaced with community-based programs and small, home-like facilities that provide age-appropriate rehabilitation services. A panel of experts will discuss and respond to the recommendations put forward in the paper.
