National Youth Justice Awareness Month     

President Obama has issued a proclamation declaring October 2016 to be National Youth Justice Awareness Month. OJJDP is at the forefront of the movement to reform the juvenile justice system and was specifically acknowledged in the proclamation for the work of its Smart on Juvenile Justice initiative. Following are highlights of OJJDP’s efforts to implement systemic reforms that emphasize prevention and community-based services as an alternative to out-of-home placement for nonviolent
youth.

Our Vision
OJJDP envisions a nation where our children are healthy, educated, and free from violence. If they come into contact with the juvenile justice system, the contact should be rare, fair, and beneficial to them.

Did you know?

Among facilities that responded to mental health evaluation questions in 2014, 58 percent reported that they evaluated all youth for mental health needs, and 41 percent evaluated some but not all youth. Only 1 percent said that they did not evaluate any youth (either inside or outside the facility) during their stay.
