Q: Are most juvenile offenders held in small facilities?
A: More than half (56%) of facilities were small (holding 20 or fewer residents), but more than half (57%) of juvenile offenders were held in medium facilities (holding 21-100 residents) in 2016.

  • Although the largest facilities—those holding more than 200 residents—accounted for only 1% of all facilities, they held 8% of all juvenile offenders in residential placement.
  • Inversely, although the smallest facilities—those holding 10 or fewer residents—accounted for 34% of all facilities, they held only 7% of all juvenile offenders in placement.
