Q: Does the time of day pattern for violent crime by youth on school days and nonschool days vary by the type of offense?
A: The temporal patterns for robbery, aggravated assault, and sexual assault committed by youth (ages 7-17) vary for school days and nonschool days.
Note: Data are from law enforcement agencies in 45 states and the District of Columbia.
  • Unlike other violent crimes, the daily timing of robberies committed by youth peaks at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on school days and at 10 p.m. on nonschool days.
  • Before 8 p.m., persons are more at risk becoming an aggravated assault victim of a youth on school days than on nonschool days (i.e., weekends and all summer days).
  • Sexual assaults committed by youth spike at 8 a.m. and noon on both school and nonschool days and at 3 p.m. on school days.
