Violent Crime Victimization
Q: Does the time of day pattern for violent crime victimization of adults and juveniles vary by the type of offense committed?
A: Serious violent crimes with juvenile victims peaked at noon and 3 p.m.; for adult victims, serious violent crime increased throughout the day, peaking around 10 p.m.
Note: Serious violent crime includes murder, violent sexual assault, robbery, and aggravated assault. Data are from law enforcement agencies in 38 states and the District of Columbia.
  • The daily timing of serious violent crimes differed for juvenile and adult victims. Serious violent crimes with juvenile victims peaked between 3 and 4 p.m., fell to a lower level in the early evening hours, and declined substantially after 9 p.m.
  • The peak between 9 p.m. and midnight in adult victimizations is found in serious violent crimes as well as simple assaults.
